Short answer: The WhatsApp Business app is a phone app for a business to chat with customers one-to-one. The WhatsApp Business Platform (usually called the WhatsApp Business API) is a set of APIs that connects WhatsApp to software, so a business can automate bookings and reminders, run campaigns with approved templates, and let a whole team reply from one number. Small shops can start on the app; once you need automation or several people replying, you need the API, usually through a platform such as AiBukko.
Many Indian businesses start with the WhatsApp Business app and then hit its limits: one owner answering everything on one phone, broadcasts that feel clumsy, and no way to automate the repetitive messages. This guide explains the real differences, using Meta’s own documentation, so you can decide what fits.
What is the WhatsApp Business app?
The WhatsApp Business app is a downloadable mobile app from WhatsApp. Meta describes it as “intended for small businesses whose primary need is to communicate with customers 1-on-1 through the mobile app.”
It gives you a business profile (address, hours, website), a catalogue, quick replies, labels to organise chats, and simple greeting and away messages. You install it on your phone, register your number and start chatting. A WhatsApp number can be on WhatsApp Messenger or the WhatsApp Business app, not both at once.
Good for: a solo owner or very small team, low message volume, mostly manual replies.
What is the WhatsApp Business API (WhatsApp Business Platform)?
The WhatsApp Business Platform is not an app. Meta describes it as a collection of APIs that let businesses “communicate with customers at scale” and integrate WhatsApp with their own systems such as CRMs and marketing tools. The main pieces are the Cloud API (hosted by Meta, used to send and receive messages) and the Business Management API (used to manage accounts, numbers and templates).
Because it is an API, a business usually uses it through software built on top of it. AiBukko is one such platform: it runs on Meta’s official WhatsApp API and gives you a booking bot, automatic reminders, marketing campaigns, templates and a shared team inbox in one workspace, without writing code.
Good for: teams with more than one person replying, businesses that want bookings and reminders automated, and anyone running regular campaigns to opted-in customers.

The rules that come with the API
The API is more powerful, and it has rules the app doesn’t. Knowing them up front avoids surprises.
1. Templates for business-initiated messages
Meta’s WhatsApp Business Messaging Policy says that on the Platform you “may only initiate conversations using an approved Message Template.” Templates are pre-written messages with placeholders (like a customer’s name or appointment time) that Meta reviews. Meta’s documentation says review can take up to 24 hours, and templates can be paused if people respond badly to them.
2. The 24-hour customer service window
When a customer messages your business, a 24-hour customer service window opens, and it resets every time they message again. Inside that window you can reply with normal, custom-written messages. Outside it, you can only send approved templates.
3. Message categories
Meta groups template messages into categories: marketing (offers, announcements), utility (updates about something the customer asked for, like a booking confirmation or reminder) and authentication (one-time passcodes). Replies inside the window are service messages. Meta charges for messages on the Platform according to its pricing policy and categories, and these rules have changed several times; check Meta’s current pricing documentation before you plan volumes.
4. Opt-in and quality
Whichever product you use, Meta’s policy requires that people have given you their number and agreed to receive messages from your business. On the Platform, low-quality messaging (lots of blocks and reports) can lead Meta to limit how many messages you can send.
Can I use both on the same number?
Historically, moving a number to the API meant leaving the app. Meta now supports onboarding an existing WhatsApp Business app number to the Cloud API so the business can keep chatting one-to-one in the app while also using the API for higher volumes. Meta refers to this as “Coexistence,” and says chat history stays in sync between the two. One detail matters: messages sent from the app do not open or extend the API’s 24-hour customer service window.
If you want to keep using your current number this way, ask about Coexistence during your AiBukko demo.
When should an Indian SMB switch to the API?
You are probably ready to move when one or more of these is true:
- More than one person needs to reply. A clinic front desk with two receptionists, or a salon where the owner and manager both handle chats. The API lets everyone reply from one number through a shared team inbox.
- You’re doing the same thing by hand every day. Confirming bookings, sending reminders, answering “what time do you close?” A booking bot and automatic reminders take this off your staff.
- You want regular campaigns. Festive offers, new-stock alerts and win-back messages to opted-in customers run through WhatsApp marketing campaigns with approved templates.
- You’re worried about getting banned. Unofficial “bulk WhatsApp” tools break WhatsApp’s terms. The official API is the sanctioned route for messaging at scale.
You can probably stay on the app a while longer if you are a one-person business with a handful of chats a day and no need for automation.

How to get started on the API with AiBukko
- Set up a Meta business portfolio (Meta requires one for the Platform).
- Connect your WhatsApp number to AiBukko. We walk you through the steps in your AiBukko demo.
- Create your first templates, such as a booking confirmation and a reminder, and submit them for approval.
- Invite your team to the shared inbox. Several team members can then reply to customers from the same number.
- Turn on the booking bot and reminders, then plan your first campaign to opted-in customers.

Frequently asked questions
Is the WhatsApp Business API the same as the WhatsApp Business Platform?
Yes, in everyday use. “WhatsApp Business API” is the common name; Meta’s official name is the WhatsApp Business Platform, which includes the Cloud API.
Can I use the WhatsApp Business API without a developer?
Yes, through a platform built on the API. AiBukko gives you bookings, reminders, campaigns and a team inbox without coding.
Can I send any message I like on the API?
Inside the 24-hour customer service window, yes, within Meta’s policies. To start a conversation, you must use an approved template.
Will I lose my chats if I move to the API?
With Meta’s Coexistence onboarding, chat history stays in sync between the app and the API. If you’re planning a move, ask about your options during a demo.
Is the green tick included with the API?
No. Official Business Account status is assigned by Meta and is not automatic. Businesses can request it from Meta once they meet Meta’s criteria.
